While MICA offers a variety of services for low-income families, we also foster leadership skills in youth through Service Learners, a program that gives youth an opportunity to learn more about giving back within their own community. MICA administers the Service Learners program each school year in Marshalltown. Consisting of 12 fourth graders from Woodbury Elementary, the Service Learners are taught civic responsibility through a variety of opportunities aimed at showing youth the impact of giving back.
In light of recent studies and events, MICA paired with SATUCI (Substance Abuse Treatment Unit of Central Iowa) to help foster leadership skills in Marshalltown youth. The program's success hinges on selected youth leading the way in their schools to make bold decisions that create a safe and drug-free environment. The Service Learners are taught the importance of being a leader through a variety of community service projects, including making blankets for victims of domestic abuse and sponsoring a bike drive to give back to children and families around the world.
The Service Learners program is designed to help youth develop in a number of ways, including:
- Developing pro-social skills that assist them in making low risk health choices that result in a safe and drug free environment
- Developing necessary skills that assist them in aiding and supporting friends, neighbors, and community members to make the right decisions
- Improving their academic performance as a result of a significant parent and community involvement at the school
Through Service Learners, many youth have already seen the impact of lending a helping hand. By working with service organizations in the Marshalltown area, the Service Learners have developed an appreciation for citizens who volunteer to help the most vulnerable of our society. Through these interactions, they have developed the leadership skills that propel them to make tough decisions and help their young peers do the same.
